Title of Sculpture: Tableith

Description:
"The solidity and power of monolithic structures inscribed with information have been burned into our minds for centuries, from Trajan's column to the Vietnam memorial. The marriage of object and text can once again provide viewers a new and enlightening perspective of the institution, RPI, founded so many years ago.
My primary focus is to produce a monumental effect with a sense of awe and respect rather than a 'stand out' personal interpretation with imagery that overcomes the purpose. The premise behind this sculpture's function may be quite evident. Upon initial viewing onlookers will circumvent a spiral tapestry of information that narrates the historical past of VCU.
This proposed Sculpture consists of 51cast discs 1917-1968, that have "cam" and teeth sections that are all different from one to the other. Each disc represents a year of the schools existence and are inscribed along their edges with key phrases of significance from that year. At the base will be a "founders stone" which will have an oval relief of Dr. Hibbs in bronze. Sandblasted into the stone below the relief is pertinent text about this important person and his accomplishments.
As they build on top of one another, they merge and mesh into a strong, interlocking singular structure. I view this as symbolic of harmony, synchronicity, and change. The organic volute appears to be a section of an infinite growth among the shrubbery and tree. A small number of stones are laid casually within the planter appearing as if waiting to be lifted into position for the future years."
