2006: RPI
and AAAC April 28-30 RPI
“We
forget all those things not important.”
Bill
O’Connell ’55BME,
former RPI Dean of Men and Dean of Students, had it right when he addressed
guests and RPI alumni of ’54, ’55, and ’56 at their induction into the
50-Year Golden Circle Alumni Club. Memories and greetings flew at RPI
Reunion, and many more were noted in the 2006 RPI Memory Book. (And look for
more in the fall issue of Shafer Court Connections.) “Did
we ever have to read in those days! And write.”
--Sally Alvis ’51BS/B “There
were a lot of stories about Richard Carlyon
’53BFA’63MFA,” said one alum. One year for Mardi Gras, he
plastered his head [to become a statue?] and got a concussion. Another year
he painted himself with green ink and almost had blood poisoning.” One
of Billie Sharp Wills’ ’54BFA’81MED favorite memories was Mardi
Gras her freshman year with Dick Carlyon. “We went as
creatures of the sea. I had one leg painted gold and one green, and I wore a
royal blue bathing suit. We wore lobsters on our heads, live—at first.
Dick carried a trident. I loved his enthusiasm, his happiness and his
dedication to art.” |
Fondest Memories of RPI “The
professors and all the friends I made and especially what I learned.” “Coming
from a small town in NC to “All-night
bridge games/contests at Shafer House.” “Attempting
to learn how to play bridge—never did.” “Basement
of Theatre Arts Department where we staged one-act plays and great
‘wrap’ parties.” “The
challenges Dr. Alice Davis (sociology) presented, interracial meetings and
working with children.” “Being
introduced to the worlds of art, drama and music.” “Christmas
celebrations in the music building.” “Being
there—nice people!” “Loved
it all!” "He was my roommate," they say. Leo Novak ’54BSsociology/H&S and Arnold Lucas ’54BS/E have been honing their double act for 50 years. In fact, their group of 18 alumni has been making their own impromptu reunions over the years, from Niagara Falls to Hilton Head. Together again at the 50-year Club Breakfast are Bob Gossett ’53B and his wife Charlie Logan Gossett ’55BFA, Willis McCauley ’54BS/B and his wife Jean, Cliff Belcher ’55BS/E and his wife Eunice, Arnold and Dorothy Lucas, Karl Holbrook’53/B and his wife Barbara McCreedy Holbrook, Norm Katzenburg ’55BS/B (who brought his letter jacket) and Mary and Leo Nowak. | ||
